Before children learn to read, they must have an understanding of how sounds work within words. Rhyming helps children improve their oral language skills and is also a precursor to learning how to write. Eventually, children will start to notice that the words that rhyme may have some letters in common when written down.
For this activity:
- Choose a CVC (Consonant – Vowel – Consonant) rhyming pattern such as ‘-at’, ‘-op’, ‘-un’, ‘-et’, ‘-it’, etc.
- Provide all the common consonants for your child to experiment with and move around. Try each consonant as the initial sound in the rhyming pattern.
- If you find a real word, write it down in a list format on a separate piece of paper.
- Create these rhyming lists over time and use them to practise reading and phonics.
