Initial Sounds Match Up Activity

Using real life objects or toys for practising initial sounds is always a good idea. Children will love hunting for objects that match the initial sounds they are learning.

For this activity:

  1. Either print letter cards, buy wooden or plastic letters or make your own hand-written cards.
  2. Select a number of letter.
  3. Find objects with initial sounds that match the letters you have chosen.
  4. Muddle-up the objects and letters and ask your child to match them together, based on the initial sound.
  5. Challenge your child to try and hear the other sounds in the word and write them down.
  6. Once they are confident with the initial sound, ask them to hunt around the house and find other objects that start with the initial sounds.
