For this activity:
- On an A4 size paper, draw a large letter in uppercase and lowercase. Tape the paper onto the table so it cannot move.
- If possible, provide a plastic or wooden version of the letter as well for reference. You will need a bowl of Cheerios.
- Ask you child to identify the letter by name and sound.
- Ask them to trace the shape of the large letter using their finger. Where should you start to draw the letter? Guide your child in drawing the letter with their finger in the correct direction. Can they do the same on the smaller wood or plastic letter? Repeat for both the uppercase and lowercase version of the letter.
- Now “build” the letter using Cheerios. Place a Cheerio at the starting point of the letter and ask you child to continue “writing” the letter with Cheerios, ensuring they continue in the correct direction. Encourage them to place the Cheerios next to each other so that the line cannot be seen.
- For an extra challenge, in the beginning of the activity, instead of drawing the large sized letter, sketch it in dots which your child can trace over. When they are ready, they can draw the large sized letter independently.
