For this activity:
- You will need: 3 ice cubes (same size), 3 identical bowls or plates, stopwatch, whiteboard or paper to record information.
- Make 3 identically sized ice cubes and put each one in identical bowls or on identical plates. Emphasis the importance of keeping all controlled variables (size of the ice cube, type of bowl etc.) consistent to ensure the results of the experiment are accurate.
- Put one ice cube in the fridge, one at room temperature and one outside. Time how long it takes for each ice cube to melt completely. Hypothesis – which ice cube will melt the quickest?
- What did you observe through your data collection (melting times)? What can you conclude from this experiment?
- This is a simple experiment designed to introduce key scientific terminology and concepts.
