For this activity:
- Fill a large bowl, paddling pool, or water table.
- Collect a variety of objects that sink or float. Make sure to collect objects that are similar in size but have vastly different densities, like a rock and a tennis ball.
- Ask your junior scientist to predict whether the object will sink or float. Make a note of the predictions on a piece of paper or use the Junior Scientist Worksheet.
- One-by-one, have the child drop each object into the water before classifying them as either “Floaters” or “Sinkers”. You can do this in the Observation section of the Junior Scientist Worksheet.
- When all objects have been classified, use key questions to try and discuss why the object either floated or sank.
- Talk about common qualities of the “Floaters” and the “Sinkers” and add your conclusion to the Junior Scientist Worksheet.
