Estimating and Counting with Cheerios

Cheerios have so many uses. When you're not eating them, you can use them for learning! Counting and estimating are important skills practised in this activity.

Estimating is an important skill. Children need to be able to determine whether their answer is within a reasonable range. These reasoning skills are building blocks to further development in maths. For this activity:

  1. Put a number of Cheerios on a string and ask your child to estimate how many there are without actually counting them.
  2. Circle the estimated number on the hundred square.
  3. Count the Cheerios as you remove them from the string. Circle the number of Cheerios on the hundred square.
  4. How close was the estimate?
  5. Reverse roles and let your child have a go at threading their chosen number of Cheerios onto the string. Threading Cheerios encourages children to concentrate as they use fine motor skills to successfully get the string through the hole.
