Guiding preschool students through sorting and categorising activities helps them connect with the world around them by identifying objects with similar features.
For this activity:
- Brainstorm different ways to categorise building blocks.
- For example, if you focus on colours, decide which colours are included in the block set. Write the name of the colour on separate sheets of paper and then sort through the bag so that the colours are separated.
- If you want to extend the learning, count how many of each colour there are. What is the most common colour? What is the least common colour?
- Try sorting the blocks by categories such as colour, width and shape.
