CVC words are three letter words that follow a consonant/vowel/consonant pattern. They are the simplest words for beginner readers to decode by blending the three sounds together.
Being able to sound-out common CVC words is an important skill for early readers to master, so try and find fun ways to practise blending them.
For this activity:
- Choose some CVC words and stick the letters onto individual building blocks.
- On 3-block-long building blocks, stick the CVC words that can be made using those letters. Ask your child to find the individual letters and build the CVC word they can see on the longer block.
- As they advance, take off the word stickers on the longer blocks and see if they can build words when prompted orally, “Can you make the word ‘sat’?”
- Start with letters: s, a, t, i, p & n
- Then introduce: c, k, e, h, r, m & d
- Move on to: g o u l f b
- Lastly teach: j z w y x q v
