‘Magic e’ Wheel

Use a 'Magic e’ spelling wheel to show how this spelling magic works! A silent ‘e’ at the end of words makes the vowel say its own name, changing the vowel sound from short to long.

Spelling rules are very important if a child wants to learn how to spell instead of just memorising certain words.

For this activity:

  1. Make a ‘Magic e’ Wheel to show how the silent “e” at the end of the word changes the vowel sound.
  2. Together try and brainstorm words that change because of the “e” at the end. For example, “car” becomes “care”.
  3. Write these words around the side of the wheel and spin the “e” around to see how the vowel sound becomes a long sound and changes the sound and meaning of the original word.
  4. Can you use the new words in sentences?
  5. Challenge: Can you try and use the original and new word in the same sentence (e.g. ‘car’ and ‘care’)?
