As children start to experiment with rhyming words, they can start to understand the concept of poetry. This easy poetry activity with simple rhymes will encourage children to spot rhyming patterns. 

For this activity:

1. Print the PDF worksheet.
2. Cut off the bottom section of the sheets and hide it from your child.  
3. Read the simple sentences together. Discuss what the missing word in each sentence might be. What word will it rhyme with? If your child needs some prompts, you can show them the pictures to help them find the answers. 
4. Spell the word using phonetic rules and write it on the dotted lines. 
5. Cut-out the matching picture and stick in the box beside the sentence.
6. Practise reading the poem with expression. 
7. Extra challenge: Can you think of another verse to add to the poem?
