Word Making Letter Scramble

Word making from scrambled letters is a fun, hands-on way of practising phonics and spelling skills while learning new vocabulary.

For this activity:

  1. Find photos/pictures of the objects you would like to practise spelling.
  2. Under the picture, draw lines to represent the number of letters in the word.
  3. Use plastic letters (Scrabble letters work well) or letter cards and scramble the necessary letters (mixed with unnecessary ones for a challenge).
  4. Ask you child to say the word in the picture. Try to break the word down phonetically – what letter sounds do you hear?
  5. Find the appropriate letters and place onto the lines under the picture. Sound out the word. Is it correct?
  6. To make this activity more challenging, remove the lines and allow the child to try and identify how many letters is in the word.
