For this activity:
- Find photos/pictures of the objects you would like to practise spelling.
- Under the picture, draw lines to represent the number of letters in the word.
- Use plastic letters (Scrabble letters work well) or letter cards and scramble the necessary letters (mixed with unnecessary ones for a challenge).
- Ask you child to say the word in the picture. Try to break the word down phonetically – what letter sounds do you hear?
- Find the appropriate letters and place onto the lines under the picture. Sound out the word. Is it correct?
- To make this activity more challenging, remove the lines and allow the child to try and identify how many letters is in the word.
