Lowercase letter are normally taught first, for reasons including:
- Books are full of lowercase letters. When children can recognise the ‘symbols’ they will feel more connected to the print.
- Printing lowercase letters is easier for little hands
- Learning 52 letters at once (26 of both upper and lowercase) is overwhelming.
When your child is comfortable with recognising lowercase letters, you should begin to introduce uppercase letters. That’s where this simple activity comes in. For this activity:
- Print or write the alphabet in lowercase letters.
- Cut-out or tear each letter.
- Get some clothes pegs from the garden.
- Write one letter of the alphabet on each peg, in uppercase letters.
- Have your child attach the pegs to the corresponding lowercase letters.
