‘Magic e’ Wheel
Use a 'Magic e’ spelling wheel to show how this spelling magic works! A silent ‘e’ at the end of words makes the vowel say its own name, changing the vowel sound from short to long.

Spelling rules are very important if a child wants to learn how to spell instead of just memorising certain words.
For this activity:
- Make a ‘Magic e’ Wheel to show how the silent “e” at the end of the word changes the vowel sound.
- Together try and brainstorm words that change because of the “e” at the end. For example, “car” becomes “care”.
- Write these words around the side of the wheel and spin the “e” around to see how the vowel sound becomes a long sound and changes the sound and meaning of the original word.
- Can you use the new words in sentences?
- Challenge: Can you try and use the original and new word in the same sentence (e.g. ‘car’ and ‘care’)?
