Reading Comprehension through Visualisation

When progressing to more difficult texts, writing begins to replace images and children must rely more on creating their own mental images of what is happening in a story. The more we encourage this skill in the early years, the easier it will be for children to do this independently as they begin to graduate to higher level texts.

For this activity:

  1. Throughout the story discuss: Touching objects mentioned in the text, what do they feel like? What sounds can they hear in their mind? What smells are associated with the story? What tastes might be linked to the text?
  2. Print these Reading Comprehension Discussion Questions to use as a guide.
