Initial Sounds Around the House

Practising initial phonics sounds should be a fun and engaging experience. Finding real life objects around the house is a great way to explore initial sounds.

 For this activity:

  1. Use an alphabet rug or floor pads if you have them. Otherwise, print or make your own letter cards.
  2. Search the house for objects to match each letter sound. Children may have to be creative with letters such as X or Z.
  3. Remember to encourage children to say the words and hear the initial sound as they find objects.
  4. When they are finished sounding-out the objects, choose some of the easier objects and attempt to spell them together on a whiteboard.
