Top 5 Free Printable Christmas Literacy Worksheets:
1. Making Words from Christmas
Letter play is a fun way to experiment with phonics and spelling. Children will enjoy this Christmas-themed printable literacy challenge. Let kids get creative with their phonics and spelling skills with this challenging literacy activity which uses the letters in the word Christmas to make smaller words. If you have plastic letters or letter flashcards, let children use these to physically move the letters around to experiment with making new words. There are many more words than presented on the worksheet so if they fill in the blanks easily, challenge them to find more words that fit into the categories. If you are looking for an extra challenge ask your children if they can think of any 6 letter words.
2. Santa Letter Template
Writing a letter to Santa is a great way to practise writing skills in a fun and non-threatening way. This template works well for younger children who still find writing sentences overwhelming. Read the sentences together and decide what word should fill in the blank. Use a whiteboard to practise writing the word first before writing on the template. Encourage children to use their phonics skills to sound out the words and spell. For an extra challenge, let children address the envelope as well.
3. Christmas Unscramble
Learning Christmas vocabulary is the first step in Christmas-themed creative writing. Encourage children to sound out each Christmas word carefully, listening for initial sounds and digraphs. Using the letters given below, try to fill in the boxes as they phonetically sound out each word. If your children are more confident spellers, cover up the letters and ask them to attempt the spelling independently. Then uncover the letters and let them check to see if they have used all of them in their spelling. For an extra challenge, use these Christmas words in a game of hangman to reinforce spellings.
4. Christmas Labelling
Labelling is a key skill children use in subjects such as Science and Geography. This activity will help children to identify key vocabulary in these Christmas pictures. First, cover up the answers underneath and ask children to identify to where each arrow is pointing on the picture. Once they have identified the body part, they can have a go sounding it out and writing it on a whiteboard. Then uncover the words on the worksheet and check each spelling. Write each word correctly in the appropriate box. If your children enjoy this, print a different Christmas picture and ask them to create their own labelling activity, drawing the arrows and boxes – this is a great motivation for using a ruler and practises fine motor skills.
5. Christmas Acrostic Poem
Acrostic poems are a fun way to introduce children to the concept of poetry. Finding a word that starts with each letter of the theme word encourages initial sounds recognition. This Christmas Acrostic Poem can be differentiated for each child. The pictures at the bottom can be cut out and stuck beside each corresponding letter of Christmas (ex. C = card). For older children, there is space beside the picture where they can have a go spelling the word phonetically. For younger children, you can fill in some of the trickier sounds of the word and leave blanks for the sounds that should be easier to distinguish.
