Counting with Cereal

Combine counting and fine motor skills practise in this fun hands-on maths activity for early learners.

For this activity:

  1. You will need 10 empty muffin paper cups, plastic numbers or flash cards from 1 – 10, kitchen tongs, a bowl of larger sized cereal such as Cheerios.
  2. Lay out the muffin cups in a line with the numbers 1 – 10 displayed in order under each cup.
  3. Firstly, identify the numbers under each muffin cup by name.
  4. Using the tongs, transfer the correct number of cereal pieces into the muffin cups.
  5. For an extra challenge, once the muffin cups are filled correctly, try adding 2 muffin cups together using the correct vocabulary: “What does 2 add 5 equal?” Children can use the cereal pieces in the 2 and 5 muffin cups to count altogether to find the answer.
