Paper plates are useful materials when teaching fractions. Introducing equivalent fractions is done best through visual, hands-on activities so children can manipulate the pieces and understand how they relate to each other.
For this activity:
1. Start by creating halves, quarters and eighth pieces using paper plates.
2. Your child can help choose a colour for each fraction, painting the different sections of the plate.
2. Once dry, cut the plate evenly to create fraction pieces.
3. On each piece, write the fraction.
4. Experiment with the pieces by answering question about equivalent fractions such as:
✔️ How many 1/8 pieces to fill up 1/2?
✔️How many 1/4 pieces fill up one whole?
✔️Use a combination of fraction pieces to make up one whole. For example: 1/2 + 1/4 +1/4 = 1 How many ways are there?
